Shady Grove Medical Center President Overcomes Odds

John Sackett, President of Shady Grove Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., is 58 years old and living with cystic fibrosis, but that doesn’t stop him from creating unparalleled patient and employee experiences at his facility. Bethesda Magazine reports that though he is significantly older than most people with CF, Sackett is diligent with treatments despite a busy schedule, allowing him to continue working hard and living life to the fullest. For Sackett, that includes elevating the Seventh-day Adventist hospital to a world-class caliber.

The hospital has had setbacks, almost losing its accreditation in 1999, and though it had improved when Sackett became President in April 2013, it was still far from”‘world-class.” But Sackett’s CF, he says, has taught him not to be intimidated by uphill battles. Since his tenure began, patient satisfaction in the emergency department has risen from 61 to 91 percent, and the hospital has received several recognitions for its outstanding performance.
