THE CLIENT: AHIMA
The client: Headquartered in Chicago, IL, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) was established to facilitate the standard collection of patient data to support the measurement and management of quality outcomes. AHIMA is governed by a 13-member board of directors that meets approximately five times a year. It is a wellestablished international healthcare association with over 100,000 members. The challenge – find a CEO for a world-class, not-for-profit organization. The time frame is short, involving the board of directors who are in different geographic regions across the U.S.
Dr. Mervat Abdelhak, an AHIMA past president and board member, served on the CEO search committee. The association began by requesting proposals from several search firms.
“Barry Cesafsky engaged all of our board members and assisted with refining the objectives of our CEO position. He was 100% focused and didn’t oversell. As a board, we asked ourselves ‘Is there any value? Does using a smaller firm impact our timeline?’ We ultimately decided that Barry’s firm fit our culture – small and family oriented with a personal touch.”
Abdelhak added, Barry made sure they knew what we needed in the ideal candidate:
“Barry went above expectations in gathering information about our association in order to find the best candidate for us. He interviewed board members and top staff and attended national meetings. He looked outside the profession and focused on the skills that fit with our organization.”
The lines of communication were right on target:
“It was a difficult task to coordinate the schedules of the board members, search committee and candidates. Barry found a centrally-located, private place for us to convene, and he kept us all apprised of how the process was progressing.”
AHIMA’S NEW CEO
Dr. Wylecia Wiggs Harris CEO
After a six-month search, Dr. Wylecia Wiggs Harris was named the CEO at AHIMA. She was pleased with the way the interviews were conducted:
“Thanks to Barry and his open style, I knew the expectations of the position and felt comfortable with the interviews. I showed up as the best version of myself thanks to the preparation I received from Barry. He was responsive, and I liked the fact that I was consistently talking with him and not passed off to others within the firm.”
On-boarding was one of my primary questions during the interview process, Harris said:

THE CLIENT: Located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Holy Cross Hospital is a private Catholic, non-profit community hospital that opened in 1955 to serve the sick and injured without regard to race, religion or nationality. Owned and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy for decades, the hospital is now sponsored by Catholic Health Ministries and is a member of Trinity Health. Its medical staff consists of more than 600 highly skilled physicians representing nearly every specialty in medicine. Their skills attract patients from around South Florida, across the United States and around the globe.
Ane McNeil, Chief Human Resources Officer for Trinity Health Michigan and National (Michigan/Florida/Georgia) was the primary contact with Ivan Bartolome and Laura Conley with HealthSearch Partners. She described the collaborative effort in the CEO search:
The challenge: find a CEO that embodies the principles and values of the faith based, non-profit hospital, while building relationships with doctors and donors
“From the beginning, it was apparent that HealthSearch was committed to finding the best candidates for our position. Ivan and Laura arranged their schedules so they were able to meet with over 50 of our doctors, making sure they had a complete list of responsibilities and a sense of challenges that the CEO might face.”
The list of skills needed was long. McNeil explained:
“We were looking for a leader who would influence change and drive us to a strong financial outcome. Additionally, we needed someone with strong community connections to interface with donors and a person with interpersonal skills to relate to our doctors. We asked HealthSearch to present us with a diverse panel, and they delivered.”
Sr. Joanne Courneen, RSM, chair of the Holy Cross Hospital Board of Directors, served on the search committee. She described the working environment:

After a four-month search, Mark Doyle was named the CEO at Holy Cross Hospital.

THE CLIENT: COOK CHILDREN’S
Cook Children’s Health Care System is a not-for-profit, nationally recognized pediatric health care organization comprised of eight entities – a Medical Center, Physician Network, Home Health company, Northeast Hospital, Pediatric Surgery Center, Health Plan, Health Services Inc., and Health Foundation. Cook Children’s is one of the country’s leading integrated pediatric health care systems.
The challenge to HealthSearch Partners: find a Chief Financial Officer that understands how to work within a children’s hospital system.
Rick Merrill, President and Chief Executive Officer, further explained the characteristics of the person needed to fill the CFO position. He explained:
“Working at a children’s hospital requires a person who is called. It is beyond a commitment – an intangible that brings you back to work every day. Families in our system have children with significant diseases and complications. Our CFO must understand government reimbursement, regulations and rules while ensuring we have adequate resources available to meet the financial circumstances of our families.”
THE CLIENT: TOWER HEALTH / READING HEALTH CFO
Reading Health Systems (RHS) includes Reading Hospital, a 730-bed acute care hospital, 7,300 team members and more than 1,000 physicians and providers across 46 locations. RHS nears completion of a $350 million dollar building project that included a 475 thousand square-foot surgical tower that will be one of the most sophisticated in the region, trauma center, with an Advanced Certified Primary Stroke Center and world-class cardiac center, both among the top 100 in the nation.
The need: Chief Financial Officer
Clint Matthews is President and CEO of Reading Health Systems. He had worked with Keith Southerland previously on other searches and knew that his firm would be the best to contact to get the right candidate.
“Both Keith and Neill have a long history working in the industry. They understand the nuances relative to the system and the specific qualifications needed for the candidates. The process was made easier due to their ability to begin the search without a lot of explanation about how things work in our system.”
Marc Harrison Named To 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare 2018
Harrison took the top job at Intermountain in October 2016 and has since made several moves to reposition the Salt Lake City-based health system. In January 2018, Intermountain joined Ascension, SSM Health, Trinity Health and the Veterans Affairs Department in announcing the formation of their own drug company. The goal: bring down the cost of drugs. Harrison has also pushed Intermountain farther down the road of using telehealth.
THE CLIENT: BAPTIST HEALTH
Baptist Health, Kentucky’s largest not-for-profit employer with more than 25,000 employees, has eight hospitals (seven in Kentucky and one in Southern Indiana), more than 300 points of care and the Baptist Health Medical Group with about 1,100 physicians and other providers.
The challenge to HealthSearch Partners: find a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization into the future.
Angie Mannino, Chief People and Culture Officer, further explained the characteristics of the person needed to fill the CEO position. She explained:
“We were looking specifically for someone who is an innovative, progressive leader with qualities to work within our large, complex organization. Our board agreed that we wanted someone who was currently working within a system the same size or larger than Baptist Health with experience to not only oversee our hospitals but also our complex business entities.”
THE CLIENT: MEDICAL CENTER HEALTH SYSTEM
Medical Center Hospital has provided care to the Permian Basin for 68 years. Opening December 5, 1949 as an 85-bed community hospital, MCH met an important need for Odessa. Over the years, MCH has expanded and added services and technology to meet the growing needs of the community. Today, MCH has grown into a 402-bed Level II Trauma Center with over 2,500 employees and 350 physicians.
The need: Chief Executive Officer
Mary Thompson, an Ector County board member since its creation, chaired the search for the hospital’s CEO. The outgoing CEO of 17 years suggested HealthSearch Partners head up the search and Thompson agreed.
“When we began our search, the atmosphere among our board members was divisive due to some internal politics. The employee morale was low. It was a pivotal time in the history of our hospital. Keith came in and interviewed the board and staff members. He was very thorough, and everyone felt they had a voice in the recruitment process.”
THE CLIENT: BAYLOR SCOTT & WHITE HEALTH
Baylor Scott & White Health is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas and one of the largest in the United States. The system includes 48 hospitals, more than 800 patient care sites, more than 7,800 active physicians, over 47,000 employees and the Scott & White Health Plan.
John McWhorter, Chief Operating Officer at Baylor Scott & White had an urgent need for hiring individuals for a supply chain group.
“Our Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer, Tony Johnson, visited with me about conducting a search. We talked with a couple of firms, but we decided to consult with Keith Southerland. We had a great experience with Keith in a previous search for our Chief Human Resources Officer position.”
THE CLIENT: LEHIGH VALLEY
With over 18,000 employees, LVHN has acute care facilities in 14 counties in Pennsylvania and has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for 22 consecutive years as one of America’s Best Hospitals.
The challenge to HealthSearch Partners: find a Vice President of Internal Audit.
LVHN began the search on their own without success. Lea Carpenter, Physician and Executive Recruitment Administrator, had received information from HealthSearch Partners previously and decided to contact them for assistance. The position was complex:
“We were looking for a person to fill a highly visible position who would report frequently to our Board of Trustees. The VP of Internal Audit needed to understand our market and have a presence to interact with our Chief Legal Officer and other top-level administrators.”
