From AI to GI – Moving Beyond Artificial Intelligence

By: Ed Fry, President

“As Chairman of the Board, I am pleased to announce that our new hospital President and CEO will be—Alexa”!!!

How far from the truth can this be? While Artificial Intelligence seems to be everywhere these days from self-driving cars to remotely changing the temperature of your home to having your refrigerator prepare a grocery list and order the items—what are we missing?

This question is extremely important to our society generally and of particular importance to healthcare organizations and  healthcare search consultants.  Traditionally, search consultants have relied upon well proven course of action.  It is process driven with one very important ingredient—the human touch or in other terms GI—Genuine Intelligence.

There is no doubt that we are in the “Data Age”—Big Data is everywhere and growing at blinding speed.  But is AI the end…or a means to an end.  Every transformative discovery that mankind has made from steam engines to microprocessors has led to a new paradigm.  Therefore, we cannot ignore the impact of AI but rather embrace it as a support for GI—a real person, a leader using his/her informed judgment in critical situations.

How does the hospital or healthcare organization manage Big Data to its advantage today?  Traditionally these organizations have been slow in their adaptation to use and incorporate the data that most collect one way or another.

Many forward-looking organizations are turning to Human Resources Analytics to measure, study and enhance practices within their organization. These organizations recognize the need to develop a culture of analytics which involves the use of software to manage the data. These entities, however, need to adjust how they view, value and utilize the data.  In doing so, they should never forget the need of the human aspects of emotional intelligence, empathy, values, networking, and creativity.  Genuine Intelligence (GI) is the “talent” in talent management.  GI is the “leader” in Leadership.
